Wow, I am so late in getting the display for National Adoption Awareness Month up, but it’s getting up. But, who cares? A specific month is kind of a forced time to think about something, whether it’s gay rights, African American history, women’s history, or adoption. I’m in charge of the displays so I’ll make sure it’s up more than just a few weeks. This is just the time that people will start to think about it.
I was just so darn busy earlier this month that I didn’t even have time to sneeze, let alone put up the display. But it’s coming together nicely. It seems funny to have pictures of people that I know, whether in person or online, getting up in the display. I love the picture of Claud with her crazy eyes. Of course, taken in its context, its quite sad and poignant. Some stories that people offered I’m taking, but I had to whittle them down quite a bit to fit into the display. I hope folks don’t mind. Others were awfully hard to even try to whittle down. I might go back to those and try to fit them in later. For the ones I fit in, I just quoted from parts of them. I also took some stills from the fantabulous video “Thick As Thieves”. Those shots are the main contribution from adoptees, but I didn’t get other offers.
And, of course, there are “happy” things in there too; all to provide a balance which is my goal. It’s just not the happy-happy-joy-joy display you might see in other places. We have all sides represented here. The book cover for The Girls Who Went Away was the first book cover to make it in there. I dun good, huh, reformy peeps?
I’ve been remiss, though. The past few years I’ve donated a book to this library about adoption, and because I’ve been so busy, this year I forgot. Any ideas for a good title to donate? It needs to be an adult book, preferably something that would work for an academic library.
OK, back to work on my display. I love doing this stuff and I’m especially loving working on this particular display! I promise pictures!
