The New York Times Magazine has an article in it about international adoptive parents who have and/or are searching for their children’s first parents. It’s a very interesting read and goes along with what I’ve read on Yahoo’s group, BirthParentContact.
The article is written by a mom who has adopted from Guatemala and is in the process of searching for her daughter’s first mother. It’s titled Looking For Their Children’s Birth Mothers.
At the least, my husband and I could tell Lucia we did everything we could to find her birth mother. While it wasn’t my motivation for searching, the act of doing so was a way — not the best or the only way — of telling our daughter that we recognized her past. She has a first chapter and a heritage that doesn’t include us.
