Doggone it, people like me!

I had a total snark going, one that was going to ask a million dollar question:

~ Is it OK for people to carry certain stereotypes about a certain issue and not other stereotypes about the same issue? For example, is it OK for people to carry the stereotype that all adoptive parents who have been through infertility have “issues” that make them less effective parents?

WHEREAS [like the legalese language? it's the best I can do, not being a lawyer and all]

~ at the same time, it is not OK to carry stereotypes about first moms or adoptees [and no, I really don't want to state certain stereotypes about them because I don't believe those stereotypes]

I mean, it makes sense that if you educate yourself about the stereotypes of one group, or two groups, wouldn’t it behoove you to educate yourself about the stereotypes of all of those groups in the adoption world. [and don't you just love the word behoove?]

THEN, I thought to myself, Oh, screw it!!:

in the immortal words of Stuart Smalley:

I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!!

Yeah! What he said! Besides, the voices in my head say that I’m OK!!

Who says I have issues?

We all have issues.

Stereotypes should NEVER be carried.

So to say “is it fair to carry one but not the other?” is like saying “is it fair to think mexicans are stupid but not think frenchmen are stupid?”.

The answer is: You shouldn’t EVER assume mexicans are stupid. You shouldn’t EVER assume frenchmen are stupid. Because Assuming makes YOU stupid. Right?

Same goes for adoption issues… and any other stereotype or assumption. If you make assumptions based on stereotypes about people instead of based on those people themselves, YOU are stupid. (Well not you, but whoever the you is in the situation at hand).

And really, I’ve got issues. You’ve got issues. And the guy that thinks he DOESN’T have issues? I wouldn’t be caught dead sitting next to him on the subway.

Just sayin’

Very well said, Nikki Jo.

the guy that thinks he DOESN’T have issues? I wouldn’t be caught dead sitting next to him on the subway.

A thousand times YES.

Which is what I was going to say about parents who actually give birth to kids and then parent them — that they have their own issues too. But then I just decided to go and get Stuart instead ;)

doggone it, I do like you!

Listen to those voices in your head, Judy . . .
