Love Thursday: Climbing, Cars, and Never Ever Falling

Lately Nate loves to wash our cars. If you lived near us, when the weather has been warm, you could drive down our street and see him, sponge and cleaning solution(s) in hand, washing down one of our cars. Or with the hose, rinsing off what he’s cleaned. I had previously said to friends, “we’ll have the cleanest cars around, up to where his arms can reach.”

Well, last night, he came up with a solution to get to the top of Daddy’s car. Most 5-year-old boys also love to climb. And here we have Nate in action, climbing up to the roof of Daddy’s car. As he reached the top, I said, “Nate, be careful!” “Of what?,” he inquired, honestly not knowing what I was worrying about. “I don’t want you to fall,” I said. “Ohhh,” he replied, “I NEVER EVER fall!” Oh my. “I never ever fall?” I’m both impressed and terrified by his fearless confidence.

As it turned out, when Daddy came out later, Nate had to get off of the roof of the car because he’s too heavy for it and he was bending the roof. Relief!

Love when you’re a 5-year-old boy is climbing. Love is cars. Love is cars AND climbing, WOW!! Love is cleaning because you know that makes Mommy and Daddy happy. Love is cars AND climbing AND cleaning, WOW WOW WOW!! Love is knowing you’ll never ever fall off because you never do. Love is being proud of a job well done. Love is getting “thank yous” from Mommy and Daddy. Love is being outside when the sun is shining. Love is being outside with Mommy and Daddy and Callie the dog. Love is saying “Hi” to everyone who walks by because you’ve never met anyone who’s not a friend. Love is running. Love is playing with your dog. Love is coming back to the car to clean it. Love is playing with the hose. Love is playing with water. Love is rinsing the cars because it means you get to spray water A LOT. Love is spraying water ALL OVER. Love is being allowed to spray the water other places when you’re done rinsing the cars. Love is Mommy and Daddy letting you wash the cars every day. Love is just being outside with Mommy and Daddy and Callie because we’re a family and we love each other. But mostly love is CARS! and CLIMBING! and NEVER EVER FALLING!!!

I love the way you capture the details of family life in such a humorous and loving way. I’ve added you to my “Family Therapy” referral list.

–pp (”Necessary Therapy” ;)

There you are! I was looking around of the LT site and found this :0) Great carwasher you have there. Can I borrow him? My car is covered in pollen!

Oh what a wonderful mother you are to let him take little risks like that without showing him the extent of your worry! I think it’s good for them in a way to let them explore and gain a sense of achievement. I also loved climbing on our cars as a kid — but our cars were old and junky. Ours is a van so that’s a bit tooooo high for my 3-year-olds so they just wash the sides instead. We have a very soapy van :)

Oh the stories I could tell about the fearlessness of my son! After about the first 200 times I have even stopped gasping.

At our house it’s pretty much all cars all the time. Oh, except when it’s sports!

Boys are fun though.

Awww, you love him so much your heart could burst! I know the feeling. Happy LT.

The way that you wrote this captured the emotion. When I read it, I felt energetic. Oh the faith of a child, it really is something that we should all try to hang on to as we get older.

Thank you, All.

Pete, that is one of the nicest compliments; thank you so much. I actually added a new category to add you to my blogroll. You just didn’t fit in anywhere else ;) .

Londa — Great to see you! I saw the pic of your boys; they are ADORABLE and have grown so much!! And Nate would love to wash your car!

Bonggamom, yeah, we try not to hover too much. It’s hard sometimes, as I’m sure you know.

And thanks, Tabitha, such a nice compliment.

Sorry to take so long to respond to the ages of my children. Actually, two of them have added a year since I last wrote. We have two biological children - Sarah (15) & Grace (13), as well as two adopted children - Caleb (6) & Hannah (3).

I am grateful to be added to your blogroll. I take perverse pride in not fitting into an existing category. It’s curious you should list the PC(USA) site after mine. I happen to belong to them. Sometimes we have our spats, but hey - they’re going to pay my pension. I hope.
